Bandit Broadcast for 12-26-2010

December 26, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

Last week finished on a quiet note, just as expected, with Friday’s net changes in the indexes mixed and minor.  The DJIA added a few points, while the NAZ, RUT, and S&P 500 each finished just barely in the red.  Traders weren’t interested in making any big moves ahead of the long holiday weekend, so the bulls were able to prevent any big slips and the bears continued their hibernation.

In the week ahead, anything’s possible.  Quite a few traders are expecting more drifty action, but with such low expectations for a sizeable move, that could be exactly what we get.  I’m making no predictions – as usual – as to what’s going to happen, but I am reminding myself the trend is up and this market isn’t acting overbought.  We’ve seen quite a few narrow-range days lately, which indicates no big struggle at the moment between buyers and sellers.  It’s common when the market gets toppy to see big reversals and heavy volume on churning days, and we have yet to see that.  Therefore, it’s certainly possible we see this market ramp a bit more into New Year’s to cap off this impressive run which began in September.

When it comes to individual stocks, the consolidation we’ve seen lately has helped to create more bases, and those are going to be on my radar as we head into tomorrow’s session.  Volume should improve as the week goes on, but keep in mind we’re right between two major holidays and therefore we have fewer players at their screens and the continued presence of the year-end factors I’ve noted throughout December.  Stay on your toes if you’re trading this week, because we don’t always get typical price action right here at the end of the year.

By the way, I’m traveling at the moment to spend some time with family, which is why I’m utilizing the written format instead of the usual video in case you were wondering.  Hopefully you’ve been able (or will soon be able) to spend some time with those you love the most this holiday season!

For tonight, my notes are on the charts below for index levels and potential trades I’m eyeing for Monday, and as you see I’m keeping it pretty light.  If volume is able to kick back up tomorrow, I may consider some swings in the days to come, but at the moment I’m looking to day trade right now since it’s the holidays and we’re seeing such light activity in the market.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-22-2010

December 22, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

The action today was muted but positive once again, as the bulls continued to make their presence known by maintaining a bid beneath current prices to avoid letting the market slip.  The slow drift up is common to see within uptrends like this, particularly when the trading volume is as light as it is on a holiday-shortened week.

Tomorrow is the last session of the week, and the final session ahead of Christmas with the market being closed on Friday.  With that being the case, we can quite likely expect minimal volume, and somewhat limited price action as the day progresses.  Traders (myself included) will be slipping away from the screens once the morning has passed, and moving on to spend time with family (as we should) for Christmas.  It happens every year, so even if your intent is to stay at your desk and trade the entire session, just keep in mind that the action may be drifty at best if there’s not sufficient news to propel the market one direction or the other.  It’s an easy environment to overtrade, so avoid making that mistake in front of the long weekend.

I have just a handful of stocks on my radar for tomorrow, which I’ll cover momentarily.  I wanted to note that I will have a Broadcast here on Sunday, so slip away from the relatives sometime on Sunday and round up back here for a game plan heading into next week!

For tonight, my notes are on the charts below for index levels and potential trades I’m eyeing for Thursday.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-21-2010

December 21, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

The indexes continued their slow grind higher today with gains across the board, taking each of them to new highs.  As expected on a holiday week, we saw volume diminish from yesterday’s levels, and despite the strength out there, that’s likely to continue as we head toward the final session of the week on Thursday.  Anytime we see price go up and volume go down, it’s not technically ideal, but in the situation of a major holiday week it’s to be expected.  Nonetheless, the buyers are still doing their thing, and apparently the sellers have no interest in asserting themselves ahead of Christmas.

With the volume likely to diminish in the next couple of sessions, I’m not looking to initiate any new swing positions ahead of Christmas.  I entered ISIL today (as per the Hit List post), but otherwise my attention for Wednesday will be on day trading.  For Thursday, I only intend to trade the morning, as I am expecting the action to be rather quiet as the day progresses.

For Wednesday though, it’s easy to overanalyze the action here but I find it’s best to just look at it as an uptrend that’s persisting, plain and simple.  I don’t want to fight the trend, so I’m considering some long-sided trades for tomorrow and will look to be out of them by day’s end at the latest, keeping tight stops and looking to ring the register on gains rather quickly.

For tonight, my notes are on the charts below for index levels and potential trades I’m eyeing for Wednesday.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-20-2010

December 20, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

Today’s session was just about what you might expect on a holiday-shortened trading week, as the intraday action lacked momentum in either direction and led to mixed results.  The indexes finished little-changed, although the NAZ, RUT and S&P 500 each posted new closing highs outside of their recent ranges.

Although today’s advances resulted in technical breakouts for those indexes, the way it happened isn’t technically ideal due to the reduced volume and lack of significant follow through beyond those zones.  Nonetheless, today produced breakouts and the uptrends are still very much intact, so there’s no need to argue with the price action at this point.  It’s simply a good time to stay cautious and on our toes due to the minimal conviction on the breakout, as well as the holiday volume which is likely to taper off and the year-end cross-currents I’ve been discussing throughout December.

In last night’s Broadcast, I noted that with this being a holiday week, it’s likely to be a good time to book quick profits when they appear and otherwise to stay selective.  That continues to hold true as this week progresses, so my aim for Tuesday is much the same.  There are setups which hold some appeal for short-term moves, but I’ll be keeping my risk limited and am willing to ring the register into favorable moves due to the expected light volume.  If volume is the fuel that propels stocks higher, and there’s likely to be less of it, it’s sensible to either expect smaller moves or to trail stops aggressively on favorable trades.

When the price action is drifty like we saw today, it’s incredibly easy to force trades and spin your wheels trying to make something happen.  Don’t fall victim to that approach this week, and instead show up with a few setups you like and take them as they come.  If you don’t see what you love, have the patience to sit on your hands and exercise some discipline.  Keep a book close by or tend to some other things until those alerts go off.

For tonight, my notes are on the charts below for index levels and potential trades I’m eyeing for Tuesday.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-19-2010

December 19, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

Last week the market put in some rest with only minor gains being posted in the major averages.  New highs were marked early in the week and then respected for the remaining sessions as the bulls defended minor dips by providing support, yet refrained from producing another runaway move.

This is a healthy rest and an excellent way to digest the advance that began at the start of December.  We have emerging flag-like patterns for the indexes, and when found within uptrends, those tend to become somewhat reliable continuation patterns.

The only catch right now beyond the technicals however, is the fact that it’s the end of the year and that brings with it a host of cross-currents.  This week, we have Christmas with the market being closed on Friday in observance of that.  We have New Year’s just a week later, and that’s just from a holiday standpoint.  Toss into the mix other factors such as tax-loss selling, end-of-quarter window dressing, index rebalancing, and lighter volume as traders take time off or travel, and the stage is set for some potentially unusual activity.

I’ve mentioned this in the past couple of weeks, and just want to reiterate that this is a time to take it somewhat easy while these end-of-year motives come to pass.  New trades should be taken with smaller size and abbreviated timeframes because of these things, and otherwise it’s an ideal time to tend to other matters like hanging out with family and friends, and reviewing 2010 in preparation for 2011 goals and modifications (if need be) to your trading plan.  Whether you do that this week or next, don’t let January get here without having some goals in place and some well-defined aspects of your trading that you’re aiming to hone in the New Year.

So as we look to the shortened week ahead of us, the market is still acting strong and still has potential to move higher.  Many have in recent days decided the Santa Claus rally has already come, and it may have, but with the charts in such good shape, further upside cannot be counted out.  I’ve got several setups on my radar for Monday, and in the video I’ll explain further but for the swing trades this week I’ll be keeping them rather tight and will be willing to make a premature exit if the price action necessitates it.  For that reason, keep an eye on your inbox or the Twitter stream (@TheStockBandit) if you’re interested in how I’m looking to manage the swing trades this week.

I’ll cover my game plan for tomorrow in the video, and as always, feel free to share your own thoughts, trade ideas, and questions down below in the comments section.

Swing Trading Candidates:

ISIL has pulled back to some short-term support and now looks poised for a move back up.  This one needs to clear the trend line at $15.05 to get back on the move, so I’ll use that level as my trigger for an entry on the long side. As with all swing trades, my stop and target levels for this trade are on the Hit List here inside the Hideout, and keep an eye on the Twitter stream (@TheStockBandit) and your inbox for possible alerts related to this trade in case I look to make an early exit due to the holiday action this week.

ANR has pulled back within its uptrend on light volume and now appears to be stabilizing with price trying to turn back up.  I’ll be going long for a swing trade if this one can clear $52.45, keeping a tight stop and looking to book rather quick profits.  As with all swing trades, my stop and target levels for this trade are on the Hit List here inside the Hideout, and keep an eye on the Twitter stream (@TheStockBandit) and your inbox for possible alerts related to this trade in case I look to make an early exit due to the holiday action this week.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-16-2010

December 16, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

Following some weak closes in the past three sessions, the market would have been justified for some profit-taking today to bring it further off its highs.  However, the buyers were back to work defending their positions, leaving the market just a short distance from its highs by the closing bell.

Today’s gains weren’t impressive by any stretch, but merely another reminder of the underlying bid beneath this market right now.  No telling what the cause of that is, nor does it matter.  The trend is up and we’ve seen some rest in the past few days, and it could be that we see another push to new highs as soon as tomorrow.  If so, a close in new high territory will be important from a conviction standpoint.

Tomorrow we have the final options expiration day of 2010, and we’re in the second half of December.  The combination of those could quite easily bring some erratic price action as unique motives enter the fray, and having been whipped out of some swing trades this week I’m not interested in adding overnight exposure on Friday.  As a result, I’ll be looking to day trade just a few select names, waiting for my triggers before taking action as usual.

I’ll cover my game plan for tomorrow in the video, and as always, feel free to share your own thoughts, trade ideas, and questions down below in the comments section.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-15-2010

December 15, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

For the third straight session, afternoon weakness erased prior gains today as the indexes moved from green to red by the closing bell.  The losses weren’t significant, but what may be significant is the fact that this market is sending daily signals of fatigue with these weak finishes.  That’s not to say we’re set to roll right over, although anything’s possible, but simply to say some caution here is warranted on the long side until we see some strength which entices more buyers rather than sellers.

The lack of conviction we’re seeing here on the upside has brought about short-term downside reversals on the charts of quite a few individual stocks.  That has left sloppy patterns over the past few sessions, and there aren’t a lot of setups tonight I’m watching (as evidenced by the abbreviated Bullish & Bearish Watch Lists down beneath the video).

My plan for the moment is to respect the indecision we’re seeing at the moment and in many cases just shorten my timeframe for new trades.  I noted here a few days ago how the end of the year brings with it some cross-currents which aren’t present during the rest of the year, and it could be that we’re just seeing some of the fruits of those other motives in the market.  Regardless, there are some setups I’m willing to take for trades on Thursday if they do happen to trigger.

I’ll cover my game plan for tomorrow in the video, and as always, feel free to share your own thoughts, trade ideas, and questions down below in the comments section.

AGU established a lower high on its daily chart and since then has been grinding lower.  A rising trend line has served as support in recent weeks, and I’ll be using that trend line as a pivot for a short sale at $80.40 if broken, looking for some accelerated selling if that trend line break occurs. As with all swing trades, my stop and target levels for this trade are on the Hit List here inside the Hideout.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-14-2010

December 14, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

For a Fed day, today was about as uneventful as they come.  The indexes moved slightly higher this morning and gave some back in the afternoon, finishing not far from where they began the day.  Momentum was fleeting, and we spent the middle portion of the session in a very choppy, tight pre-FOMC range.  Indecision was prevalent all day though, as even the afternoon selling was followed by a bounce into the closing bell.

Often times, the market needs an extra day or two to really digest the FOMC and make a move, and today we saw no clear response to provide with us with expectations for tomorrow’s session.  Perhaps we’ll see better momentum surface tomorrow in one direction or the other, so I’ll be watching for a multi-day high or low to arrive to signal that.

Tonight in looking through a great number of charts, I saw many stocks which are indicating a need for further rest.  With no interest in forcing trades out of sloppy bases, my list for Wednesday’s session is rather limited – and that’s not so bad.  There are some candidates I’m considering for plays on the long and short sides, as well as day and swing trades to help diversify timeframes.

One final note I’d like to make is that with it being near the end of the year, there’s plenty of noise about where the market will finish and how these next couple of weeks will play out.  Some say we’ll ramp higher, others say we’ll see selling pressure as funds move to lock in profits.  Personally, I don’t care which way we go or if we move at all.  What I want to remind you of is that it’s always important to assess the current situation from a technical standpoint, and right now we’re sitting near highs within an uptrend.  I’m not interested in fighting the trend until signs emerge that it’s ending, and thus far we don’t have that.  So, stick with what you see on the charts, and leave opinions aside for the talking heads on TV.  You and I will only make money trading when we take action on quality setups with defined risk and good potential… not when we marry ourselves to a thesis and then hope it plays out.

I’ll cover my game plan for tomorrow in the video, and as always, feel free to share your own thoughts, trade ideas, and questions down below in the comments section.

ATU recently crossed a key level at $24 and gathered momentum quickly to the upside.  Since then, it has put in some needed rest, but today it began to turn higher within its base on improved volume and may be ready to start another leg up.  I’ll be a buyer if this one clears $27.85 to confirm this bull flag.  As with all swing trades, my stop and target levels for this trade are on the Hit List here inside the Hideout.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-13-2010

December 13, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

The market was poised for continued strength for much of today’s session as each of the indexes held positive for the bulk of the session.  However, fatigue seemed to set in as we saw some profit-taking pick up in the final hour of the day to erase the gains and put an end to the NAZ streak of 8 consecutive gains.

Today’s late reversal isn’t yet something to be concerned about, for a few reasons.  First, it wasn’t the kind of nasty selloff where technical damage was done.  Second, the indexes finished mixed, with the NAZ and RUT lower while the S&P 500 and DJIA actually finished slightly in the green.  And third, we still have former resistance levels which could still serve as support in the days ahead if this pullback continues, so I’m suspending judgment until we see more technical clues surface.  Today’s action simply appeared to be a sign of fatigue, so I’ll wait to see how the market responds to it in the next couple of days.

A byproduct of today’s turnaround is that it left quite a few charts of individual stocks looking sloppy, so my focus for Tuesday’s session is narrowed as a result.  The setups I’m eyeing are for day trades, as I’m content with the current stocks on the Hit List and those which are set up for plays tomorrow look best to me for hit-and-run types of trades.

We’re still in a great trading environment here, but the key to maximizing it is to lay low when setups are tougher to find and only get aggressive when potential plays become more prevalent.  For Tuesday, I’m planning to take what the market’s offering here and otherwise be patient.  I’ve rarely regretted doing that in times like this where the market is attempting to rest in the short term.

I’ll cover my game plan for tomorrow in the video, and as always, feel free to share your own thoughts, trade ideas, and questions down below in the comments section.

Bandit Broadcast for 12-12-2010

December 12, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Videos

Good evening StockBandits!

The indexes stretched to new multi-year highs on Friday (with the exception of the DJIA), capping off another strong week.  Recent trading ranges were left behind for the NAZ and S&P 500, reminding all that the trend remains up and the buyers remain in control.

It’s no surprise that given the multi-week trading ranges we just broke out from, the stocks on my radar at this point are nearly all bullish.  The idea is to trade with the proverbial wind at your back, or with the trend, so that’s my aim at the moment.  It also happens that with all the strength out there, bearish candidates are simply more sparse at the moment.  Regardless, there are some nice setups I’ll get too momentarily which are on my radar for plays on Monday and this week.

I expect there to be more good setups as time goes by, so we’re in a nice environment here to do some trading – no matter which direction this market heads.  The next several months are likely to be that way, so even though the “easy” money may have been made for the current rally to investors, there will be many opportunities to capitalize on for those of us who are trading.

With it being December, I have to make mention of a couple of factors which just don’t play a role for the rest of the year which are in play over the next few weeks.  Tax loss selling is the biggest one, as are index rebalancing and quarter-end and year-end window-dressing for funds.  That’s a lot to take in, but essentially it’s just a mixture of motives for buying and selling which don’t come together simultaneously except for December, and particularly later in the month.  So we may have another week or two of “normal” trading activity, but as the holidays approach, it’ll be wise to shore up exposure for a few days.  I’ll remind of this in the next few weeks, but wanted to put it out there now as we head into the final 2/3 of the month.  If you typically take some down time around the holidays anyway, it’s nothing to be concerned about.

I’ll cover my game plan for tomorrow in the video, and as always, feel free to share your own thoughts, trade ideas, and questions down below in the comments section.

RS exhibited exceptional momentum recently after clearing a trend line, and since then the stock has pulled back only slightly.  Instead, it has been basing in a bull pennant pattern, and I’m watching for a push through $50 to signal the start of another leg higher.  I’ll be using that as my trigger to get long. As with all swing trades, my stop and target levels for this trade are on the Hit List here inside the Hideout.

As with all swing trades, my stop and target levels for this trade are on the Hit List here inside the Hideout.
