GRMN stopped – back to cash

Open Position Notes:

No open positions – 100% cash waiting on new entries.

Closed Positions:

GRMN bounced again today to push back up into the gap from earlier this month, filling it completely and moving through my stop to take me out of my position for a 2.9% loss.  While the loss wasn’t a big one, this kind of a reversal is disappointing given the stock had a few opportunities to really break down.  It isn’t ready to go, so I’m out for now with a manageable loss and will await a new pattern before considering another entry.

POT closed ahead of earnings

Open Position Notes:

GRMN bounced today on increased volume, taking it right up to the area of the unfilled gap from a couple of weeks ago.  This is not encouraging price action after seeing the stock attempt to break down on Monday and fail to gather steam to the downside.  It could be that today’s jump was a short-squeeze type of move, but the strong volume suggests otherwise.  I’m leaving my stop as-is for tomorrow’s session, and will abide by it should the stock trade up to that level.

Closed Positions:

POT gapped higher this morning just a day ahead of tomorrow’s earnings report, so I took the overnight gift and booked the profit.  I was going to exit this position today anyway, one way or another, and fortunately it was on strength rather than weakness.  My exit netted me a 2.3% gain, which wasn’t a big winner but it beat stopping out and as of yesterday it was very close to doing so.  I’ll now leave this one alone and wait for a new pattern to emerge.

Open Position Notes:

GRMN bounced back a bit today but not in a convincing fashion as volume was still below average and price didn’t make much headway.  The stock tested my entry level and held below it, which was encouraging.  I’m staying with this trade for the time being while waiting to see if it can break down further.

POT pulled back a bit further today to test support, and narrowly held that area.  My stop is not far away from current levels, and earnings are due out Thursday.  Needless to say, I’ll either stop out tomorrow or close this position early.  In the latter scenario, watch for an intraday update via email and Twitter.

YNDX stopped

Open Position Notes:

GRMN weakened further today to mark a new pullback low.  The stock was able to lift from its worst level, but never attempted to fill the opening gap and still appears to be in a position of weakness.  I’m watching for downside follow through as the sellers are still in charge for now.

POT sold off today but held just above my stop loss, keeping me in the position for now.  This appears to be another test of support, and it’s not surprising to see some weakness here with the overall market struggling today.  Nonetheless, the stock did rebound slightly from its worst levels, so perhaps it can lift a bit in the next couple of sessions.  Earnings are due out Thursday morning before the bell, so I’ll look to exit prior to then.  Watch for a possible mid-day exit via email or Twitter in the next couple of sessions.

Closed Positions:

YNDX gapped lower this morning and tumbled further, taking out all recent support from the past few weeks to stop me out for a 3.7% loss.  This was a disappointing downside reversal given the stock had held up so well of late, indicating it was ready to continue its uptrend of the past few months.  However, defining my risk is what keeps me in the game, so I’ve booked the loss and will wait for a new setup before looking for another entry.

Open Position Notes:

YNDX pulled back Friday to test the mid-week low, and it was able to respect that level and lift modestly from there into the close.  Volume was also down on the session, which is what I want to see on a pullback day when I’m long.  This stock is basing in the area of the breakout zone from last week, so I’m going to stick with it and leave it a little room to fluctuate for now.  Earnings are due out Thursday, so I’ll look to exit prior to then, possibly through an intraday update via Twitter & email so be on watch for that.

GRMN gave up a little more ground Friday with a slight increase in volume, adding to the appearance of late that the recent bounce attempt is in the process of failing.  I’m sticking with this trade for now with my existing trade parameters, as it still has some time before earnings are due out.

POT finished last week on a positive note after turning higher within its range.  My entry has been tested but the stock has lifted modestly, keeping it in a bullish stance with potential for further upside.  Earnings due out Thursday morning ahead of the bell, so I’ll look to exit prior to then, possibly through an intraday update via Twitter & email so be on watch for that.

Open Position Notes:

YNDX held up very well today after a light-volume dip yesterday.  Despite the overall market weakness, the worst spot this one was all day was down 9 cents, but it finished higher on the session with a nice return of volume.  The relative strength is encouraging, but I’d like to see some follow through sooner than later with a push to Target 1 followed by the creation of a new recovery high.  No change to my stop as of yet.

GRMN slid a bit today alongside the market, but it’s not yet breaking down.  This one is just lingering near the broken trend line from earlier this week, so I’m still waiting to see some follow through here.  There’s room for it to head lower, so I’ll be keeping an eye on Monday’s low.

POT at one point recovered all of what was given back on Wednesday and then a little more, but it finished off its best levels of the day to post a modest gain.  All in all it did hold up in relation to the overall market, and support is still holding for now, so I’m sticking with it.  Earnings are due out next Thursday so I’d like to see it get going soon.  It may end up warranting either an aggressively-raised stop or an exit prior to the targets if they are not hit, so keep an eye on Twitter and your inbox in the next few sessions as I will send out an alert if that is the case.

Open Position Notes:

YNDX pulled back today to fill the gap from yesterday morning, which overall is rather healthy price action.  This kind of backing and filling as a stock tests a recent breakout zone isn’t anything to be highly concerned about.  I liked the fact that today’s dip was not only shallow (given the recovery from the day’s low), but also occurred on light volume.  I’m staying with it.

GRMN turned slightly lower today after a bounce back up yesterday failed to clear last week’s resistance.  Today’s downside was limited, however, and volume was light, making it difficult to read much into the weakness we saw.  Some downside follow through would belp to solidify this trade, so I’m still waiting to see that.

POT was unable to produce any continuation to yesterday’s rally and instead pulled back to test the trend line break.  It finished right in the neighborhood of that level, but volume was very light compared to yesterday so I’m not considering this a failure-in-the-making.  I’ll stay with my existing trade parameters as we head into tomorrow’s session.

POT triggered, MGA stopped

Open Position Notes:

YNDX gapped up this morning then rallied toward Target 1 into mid-day, stopping just a few cents shy of that mark before drifting back a bit in the afternoon.  Overall the stock gained some nice ground on the day, but I’d like to see how it acts given another chance to push through the $28 area.  No changes to my stop yet.

GRMN rallied a bit today after yesterday’s trend line break to the downside.  Although the stock recovered some, I liked the fact that upside volume was light and last week’s resistance held.  That indicates the stock may have trouble rallying from here, although we’ll see.  I’m sticking with the trade for now.

POT triggered a buy today as it crossed up through the descending trend line noted in last night’s Broadcast, gapping just a few cents through that level.  From there, the stock rallied steadily into early afternoon before backing off.  It held the majority of its morning gains, however, which is a nice start to this trade.  I’m leaving my stop as-is for tomorrow’s session, but I expect to tighten it with greater aggression as the earnings date approaches.

Closed Positions:

MGA triggered a short entry yesterday as it gapped significantly through my intended price, warranting a 1/4 position size.  I tightened my stop last night as well, and this trade stopped out today for a 3.8% loss.  Given the very small size of the trade, it felt like a 1% loss.  Nonetheless, I’m out of the trade as it did not unfold as expected.

POT added, YNDX, GRMN & MGA triggered, TRIP removed (pattern negated without triggering), MGA stop tightened

Open Position Notes:

YNDX triggered a buy this morning as it gapped 1c through my intended buy point to clear the trend line.  The stock was only able to move a few cents higher from there as the NAZ fell under pressure, and it subsequently pulled back a bit.  I didn’t mind it given that Friday’s low was held and volume was lighter, so I’ll suspend judgement for now and see how this one acts tomorrow.

GRMN triggered a short sale today as it broke the small rising trend line to begin another leg lower.  Volume picked up with today’s selling, indicating the path of least resistance remains down.  The stock did bounce slightly from its intraday low, but overall it remains weak so I’m sticking with it.

MGA triggered a short sale today as it gapped through my intended trigger price at $45.20, opening instead at $43.90.  The gap was more than 2%, so as per my swing trading strategy I immediately reduced my position size to 1/4 of my intended amount.  Anytime a gap of that magnitude occurs, I reduce my position in order to offset the added risk (distance to my initial stop).  From there, the stock did bounce a bit, but couldn’t reclaim the trend line by the close.  I’ve tightened my stop tonight for this very small position.
