FBHS stopped, TEX removed (pattern negated without triggering)

Open Position Notes:

No open positions – 100% cash.

Closed Positions:

FBHS declined further today to trigger my stop loss, taking me out of the trade for a 3.5% loss.  While I’m disappointed with taking the hit in this trade, the setup was one I felt comfortable with and would take again if given a similar opportunity.  The initial movement in the trade was positive with the stock pushing to new highs, and the light-volume pullback had held support prior to today’s heavy selling in the overall market which this stock simply couldn’t withstand.  I’m out with a manageable loss and will now wait for a new pattern to emerge before considering another entry.

Open Position Notes:

FBHS pulled back with the market today, but was able to hold support and therefore I’m still in the trade.  Volume was also light on the day, and we did see an attempt to lift in the afternoon although it was not much.  At this point, the stock looks to have pulled back within its uptrend, but no change of character has hit the stock and therefore I’m sticking with my existing trade parameters as we head into tomorrow’s session.

GRMN stopped, TEX added

Open Position Notes:

FBHS saw an attempt at an early rally on Thursday but profit-taking kicked in until mid-afternoon when the stock again turned higher to post a minor net gain on the session.  This of course breaks the 5-day streak of declines, which is positive to see.  Volume also was strong on the day, although at this point we’ll now need to see some upside follow through.  The potential is there for this to hold as a higher low, so the overall chart remains bullish and I’m sticking with the trade.

Closed Positions:

GRMN never could get going despite being given a few weeks to make it happen.  On Thursday, the stock dipped enough to hit my stop loss at $46.25.  Along the way, however, the stock paid a $0.40 dividend, effectively making my exit $46.65, so on a net basis I booked a 1.2% loss in the trade.  For a trade which never was able to confirm the pattern I was trading, this is about as small of a loss as I could have taken.  I stayed incredibly patient with it to give it time to go and allow it room to fluctuate, but ultimately the stock just wasn’t ready to rally.  I’ll now let it be until it sets up for another play.

NIHD stopped, JEF removed (no trigger, pattern not ready)

Open Position Notes:

GRMN pulled back again today to incrementally break the March low intraday, only to recover just enough to hold it on a closing basis.  My stop isn’t far away, and in fact was just a few cents from today’s low, so this one is still in danger of stopping me out.  That said, the near-term range is still intact as is the gap from Feb 22.  This one has really struggled with the $48 level of late, which has prevented it from climbing higher.  I’m still in with the $46.25 stop so we’ll see if it holds ahead of the 3-day weekend.

FBHS posted its 5th straight decline today, but it did hold recent support and the stock did recover from its intraday low.  I’m staying patient right now with this one to see if the next lift in price is able to gather some momentum.  For now, this seems to be a test of price so I’m letting it play out while maintaining my original stop.

Closed Positions:

NIHD gapped lower this morning then continued down in the opening minutes, only to reverse back up and finish nicely positive by the end of the day.  Unfortunately though, the early weakness triggered my stop to take me out of this trade for a 3.8% loss.  I’m disappointed to have been shaken out on such a quick downside test, but I’m going to keep this one on watch in case it sets up again soon as I may give it another shot.

Open Position Notes:

GRMN eased slightly higher in today’s session, but light volume most likely prevented a better move from taking place.  Nonetheless, it did finish near its highs and the stock has a shot at clearing the short-term (past 7 sessions) descending trend line which could send it to the next resistance area near $48.  I’d like to see that level cleared before the 3-day weekend, as this one has had ample time to start making its move and at this point I’m getting a bit weary of seeing it churn day after day.

FBHS gave up a few more cents today but it wasn’t much.  I also liked how volume declined and price finished closer to the session high than the low, so perhaps that’s indicative that this little multi-day dip in price is coming to completion.  I’m staying with it for now and have not yet made any adjustments to my stop.  Should the stock turn higher from here, I will likely make an adjustment, so we’ll see if it can gather some interest in the next couple of days.

NIHD pulled back today on continued light volume, but the stock just trended lower intraday.  It still has some room before my stop would be hit, so it could be that it’s just a test of short-term support.  I’m going to stick with my existing trade parameters heading into tomorrow’s session, but this one needs to stabilize pretty quickly or else I’ll be punting it.

Open Position Notes:

GRMN gained a little ground today but overall stayed within its range of the past few weeks.  There is a new descending trend line along the highs of the past 6 sessions, which if crossed, could spark some better momentum.  Currently that’s around the $47.70 area, followed by the recent resistance around $48.  A push through there could finally set this one free for higher prices.

FBHS pulled back today as a bit of profit-taking handed the stock its third straight decline.  Overall this one is still holding above the recent breakout zone, so I’m staying with my existing trade parameters while waiting to see some follow through come in.

NIHD pulled back today to fill the gap from Friday morning, then was able to recover nicely to post a loss on the session of just 5 cents.  I’m encouraged by today’s price action, particularly on lighter volume, and will now be looking for some upside continuation in the days ahead.

NIHD triggered

Open Position Notes:

GRMN continued to base beneath $48 last week with a few attempts at the area each proving futile.  The stock is still caught in a trading range, so it hasn’t yet stopped me out or lifted enough to warrant taking profits.  I’ve been very patient with this one while waiting to see if it would turn higher after holding the upside gap from late-Feb, and it seems I’m going to have to just wait it out until there’s cause for an exit.

FBHS rested again on Friday as light volume left the stock in a narrow range with just a minor decline.  Overall, this is healthy price action to see the stock resting after a nice multi-day run, so I’m staying patient here and waiting to see if it will either carve out a new level of support or head higher toward my Targets.  So far, so good, I’m just staying put for the time being.

NIHD triggered a buy on Friday with a nice rally up through the upper end of the descending channel which had formed over the previous 6 sessions.  The stock was able to close above the trend line, which I found encouraging, despite the lack of strong volume on the turn higher.  I still like this setup for some continued strength, so I’m going to stick with my existing trade parameters heading into Monday’s session.  It’s also important to note that the stock did mark a higher high intraday, as well as posting its best close in several weeks.

NIHD relisted (with updated levels)

Open Position Notes:

GRMN again spent the morning pulling back, but found intraday support which produced an afternoon lift to take it back into positive territory by a few cents.  This stock continues to respect $48, and I suspect if we see that level cleared it could bring about a quick spike to the upside.  For now, I’m waiting patiently.  Should the overall landscape happen to shift, I may make an intraday exit and alert via Twitter and email to that effect, but otherwise I’ll stay put.  Volume is improving, so perhaps that means a longer-lasting move is on the near horizon.

FBHS held its ground nicely today after a solid multi-day lift in recent sessions.  Today the stock pulled back early and then spent the rest of the day climbing back to the flat line, finishing lower by just a nickel.  I also found the volume to be very encouraging as it was quite light today as the stock put in a day of rest.  This bodes well from a technical standpoint for some follow through to the upside in the days to come.
