PPO & CAM triggered

Open Position Notes:

MPEL jumped higher at the open this morning, then gained some additional ground before settling into a high range for the rest of the day.  This is very constructive price action as the stock hits new highs, and I like how it’s basing to attempt to digest the rally.  Target 1 is coming into view, and I’ll be looking for additional follow through going forward after this breakout.  I’m going to give this one another day with some room to fluctuate before making any adjustments to my stop.

CROX was hesitating to move higher yesterday after attempting to break out, but today the stock woke up with some pep in its step and trended higher throughout the session.  This one is now making multi-day highs, and I particularly liked how volume picked up substantially over yesterday’s levels.  I’m now watching for follow through toward the targets.

PPO triggered a buy this morning as it turned back up to clear the descending trend line.  It made some nice progress on the day, and appears to be starting a new leg up within its trend.  Follow through will now be the key, and ideally on some stronger volume (above average).  Nice start.

CAM triggered a buy today as it left its bull flag pattern with an upside breakout.  Volume was higher than at any time in the past couple of weeks, which is nice to see accompanying a surge in price.  The stock also finished strong to go out right at its highs of the day, so we’ll see if that carries over into tomorrow.  I also liked the dip which was bought mid-day, as that indicates to me (along with the improved volume) that the stock is gaining interest on the part of buyers.

CROX triggered

Open Position Notes:

MPEL challenged Friday’s highs today but couldn’t get clear of them with the market weakness.  The stock pulled back to test the $14 area, then showed some excellent strength in the afternoon to recover and finish down only a few cents.  I’m encouraged by this relative strength and will be on watch for some upside continuation in the days ahead – particularly if the broad market is able to stabilize.

CROX triggered a buy this morning as it pushed past the descending trend line, but ultimately it succumbed to widespread weakness and finished the day back inside its base.  It ended at its low of the day, which is not typically a good signal.  I’m going to leave my stop as-is for tomorrow’s session and see if it can recover.

Open Position Notes:

MPEL triggered a buy on Friday morning as it pushed past resistance to break out from its ascending triangle pattern.  The early rally was followed by a shallow pullback to test that area for a few hours before a solid advance into the closing bell took the stock to its highs of the day.  Volume picked up over the previous couple of sessions, which is good to see on a breakout.  I’d like to see price show some follow through soon with more volume expansion, but this is a good start so far.  As the stock makes more progress, I’ll then look to make adjustments to my stop.

NOG closed, AEM stopped – 100% cash

Open Position Notes:

No open positions – 100% cash.

Closed Positions:

NOG pulled back sharply today, hitting my raised stop for the 2nd half of my position (already had booked 1/2 profits at Target 1 last week).  The 2nd half took me out at breakeven, and when averaged with last week’s gains it gave me a 3.5% profit on the overall trade.  I’m pleased with that considering the market weakness and the abrupt change of character in this stock.  I’ll leave it alone for now until it stabilizes and sets up for another play.

AEM continued its pullback today to hit my stop loss, taking me out for a 2.7% loss.  This one triggered and then returned quickly to its base, which I noted last week was not a positive indication.  While it may be able to stabilize and turn back up, I’m not going to stick around.  If it sets up for another play, I’ll take it then, but for now this is a stock that seems stuck in its base and therefore needs more time before it’s ready to go higher.

No changes

Open Position Notes:

AEM gave up a few cents on Friday after actually opening higher.  However, volume sagged on the pullback in price, which is something I don’t mind seeing given that this stock is still inside its base.  I’m going to stick with it a bit longer before considering any adjustments, as I’d like to see if it is able to make another attempt at a turn higher.

NOG pulled back on Friday, giving back a portion of Thursday’s gains.  Here again, volume was very light, running just half of normal.  That’s exactly what I like to see in a stock like this which as given me a momentum pop and now is seeing mild profit-taking.  I’m going to leave my adjusted stop as-is for Monday, giving this one some room to breathe should it happen to rest further.  I like the price action here though, so I’ll be looking for a continuation move in the days ahead.

NOG Target 1 hit (1/2 profits booked) and stop raised

Open Position Notes:

AEM pushed past yesterday’s high this morning, but wasn’t able to hold onto the upside gap.  Profit-taking kicked in and the stock turned negative, where it stayed for the remainder of the day.  We also saw volume increase over yesterday’s volume on the breakout, which isn’t an encouraging sign.  This stock is now back inside its base after a failed breakout, but there’s still a shot at another attempt higher.  I’ll give it that chance by leaving my stop loss as-is for tomorrow’s session and then reevaluate over the weekend.

NOG continued nicely higher today with a morning run up which took it past Target 1 at $24.10.  I closed 1/2 my position there for a quick 7.1% profit.  Last night I mentioned I had wanted to see the stock push past last week’s high, which it did with ease today on improved volume.  The afternoon pullback was mild and essentially the stock based for the final few hours of the day, which is fine and understandable after a big quick pop.  I’ll give remaining shares some room to breathe with an adjusted stop loss, and otherwise will be on watch for follow through in the coming days.

AEM & NOG triggered

Open Position Notes:

AEM triggered a buy today right after the opening bell.  It pulled back slightly soon afterward to fill the morning gap, then worked its way higher into the afternoon.  Today’s advance was nothing spectacular, but that’s entirely fine.  This is the kind of setup I expect to gradually gain momentum, so a quiet start is perfectly alright.  Volume was quiet across the board today, but I would still like to see the activity in this one perk up a bit to accompany the price advance and add some credibility to it.  Now I’ll be watching for follow through.

NOG triggered a buy today, pulled back briefly, then spiked higher.  The stock got within just a nickel of last week’s high before backing off slightly in the afternoon.  Today’s breakout was solid, and I liked the relative strength to the market.  Next I’d like to see some follow through, stronger volume (though it did improve today), and a move beyond last week’s high at $23.34 just to truly confirm the breakout.  Good start so far.

GGC stopped

Open Position Notes:

No open positions – 100% cash.

Closed Positions:

GGC triggered a buy yesterday as it left its falling wedge pattern to the upside.  Volume wasn’t inspiring, but neither was the overall market volume, so I wasn’t concerned about that aspect yesterday.  I noted here last night that I wouldn’t expect the stock to reverse sharply after leaving the wedge, and I raised my stop a bit as a result.  Today with the market selling off hard, GGC stopped me out for a 3% loss.  It’s never fun to see an about-face turnaround in a trade which cleared a key trend line on a closing basis just last night, but a technical failure is grounds for dismissal so I’m out of this position and have no interest in the long side with the stock once again making new lows.
