Hit List 1-4-2012

CRM triggered

Open Position Notes:

COH rallied throughout the morning before leveling off in the afternoon, and again this stock tested the upper area of its channel and held.  While I’d much prefer to see it heading lower within the channel, the fact that it still hasn’t broken out is to be noted here.  I’m going to stick with it with my original trade parameters and see if the move I’m expecting takes place.  If not, I’ll stop out and let it go.

CRM triggered a short sale today after a downside gap left it opening beneath my intended trigger price.  As per my gap rules, I took a reduced position size but still went with the trade.  From there, the stock headed a bit lower, never challenging the opening gap.  Combined with Tuesday’s downside reversal, this appears to be a meaningful short-term change of character for the stock which should benefit this trade.  I’m leaving my stop as-is for now while waiting for follow through.

VRTX triggered & stopped, COH triggered, P added

Open Position Notes:

COH triggered a short sale today after testing resistance, failing, then making a new multi-day low.  The stock went out at its low of the day, suggesting the sellers ran out of time before they ran out of inventory.  While I did expect to see volume increase across the board today, I am pleased with the big red volume bar on the daily chart for this stock as it now turns back down within its channel.  I’ll leave my stop as-is for the time being, and will watch for some follow through in the days ahead before looking to make any adjustments.

Closed Positions:

VRTX triggered a buy this morning on the open, gapping slightly through my intended entry price with the broad market strength.  The stock wasn’t able to make much additional progress, however, before it reversed lower and sold off for the remainder of the session.  The reversal hit my stop loss, taking me out of the trade for a 4% loss.  This pop-and-drop kind of move is frustrating, but it’s part of trading and the setup in this stock was one I’d take again.  With today’s failed breakout though, it’s an indication that the stock isn’t ready to go, so I’ll leave it alone for now.

Closed Positions:

GS cleared short-term resistance last week, but couldn’t hold it after a hard selloff Thursday and then today.  The stock ultimately headed down to mark a multi-day low, stopping me out for a 3.5% loss.  I stayed patient with this one and the setup was favorable for continued strength, but the overall market conditions simply prevented this one from gaining any traction.  Even today when the market lifted late, this one struggled to participate at all, so I’ll leave it alone until it sets up again.

VRX & SLG added

Open Position Notes:

GS headed higher last Wednesday for a solid breakout, but failed Thursday along with a market pullback.  Volume decreased, however, and then the stock rebounded Friday to round out the week not far from former resistance.  Overall this stock is back in its base, so it’s still holding up and therefore I’m willing to stick with it for now while maintaining a stop upon a multi-day low.  This one has an intermediate-term higher low on the daily chart, so the potential for a continued run higher remains in effect.

POT & VRX & APA removed (did not trigger & patterns failed)

Open Position Notes:

GS got off to a nice start Wednesday with a solid push higher on strong volume after clearing my trigger price.  Today, however, the stock struggled to hold up in the face of the weak market, and instead fell back beneath short-term resistance.  It’s still holding above my stop for the time being, so I’ll stick with it for now and see if it can act better and stabilize before hitting my stop.  Otherwise, I’ll punch out of it and move on to the next trade.  I still like the prospects for further upside, but the market will need to cooperate and today’s action points to some healthy profit-taking.

GS triggered, POT & APA & VRX added

Open Position Notes:

GS triggered a buy today as it cleared short-term resistance, and what a nice initial move this was.  The stock had tested multi-day support (which also validated the area of my stop) this morning, then turned higher and gained momentum with excellent volume expansion.  The stock finished above $105, which puts it into the so-far-unfilled gap from 11/9 with an extension up to the 108.50 area.  A fill of that gap would achieve Target 1 for me, so I definitely like the way this one started out today.  I’m leaving my stop as-is for now, but will look to make an adjustment upon further progress in the trade.  It looks like the higher-low scenario is being embraced by both bulls (putting cash to work) and bears (covering shorts), and that’s adding to the recent momentum in the stock.
