Hit List 10-12-2010

October 12, 2010 By Jeff White Filed Under: Hit List

The Hit List is a look at our current swing trading positions. Stocks we are already in have “triggered”, while those we are considering for plays have not triggered. Click post title to view print-friendly link.

EJ stopped, 100% cash tonight

Open Position Notes:

No open positions.

Closed Positions:

EJ hit my stop today to take me out for a modest 2.1% loss.  Monday’s failed push through the trend line proved to be telling, as today the stock turned lower to exhibit relative weakness to the overall market.  I’m out for now, but am going to keep an eye on this one in case it begins to act stronger once again.  I liked the setup for another push higher, but a downside reversal after a trend line break simply doesn’t justify a position in the stock for now.

ATPG closed, EJ triggered

Open Position Notes:

EJ triggered a buy this morning as it cleared the trend line at $19, and initially it found some follow through.  However, the stock sagged soon after, slipping back beneath the trend line by the closing bell.  This gives today’s attempt at a breakout the look of a failure.  While many of the first-day failures like this end up getting stopped out, some of them do go on to make good moves.  My stop isn’t far below, so I’m going to leave it as-is heading into Tuesday and see what happens.

Closed Positions:

ATPG vaulted higher today, moving easily through Target 1 on the way up (where I closed 1/2 my position for a 5.8% gain).  It neared Target 2 late in the day, but with the market starting to falter a bit and the stock getting somewhat extended, I decided to close out the 2nd half at $15.35 for 11.6%.  This gives me a net 8.7% gain for the trade in just a few days time, which is great.  I’ll keep this one on the radar in case it sets up again for another run.

Open Position Notes:

ATPG turned solidly higher on Friday after stalling for a couple days following its trigger.  Friday’s move took it above the recent consolidation area, and I’m now looking for a push to Target 1 in the next couple of sessions.  If and when that level is reached, I’ll then look to make an adjustment to my stop.  So, it has taken a couple of days to get going, but I like the action at this point and am staying with it for now.

TIE stopped

Open Position Notes:

ATPG spent much of the day not far from Wednesday’s closing levels, with the exception of a mid-day slide which took it down nearly to my stop loss.  That level was held though, and this stock ultimately recovered from the dip in the afternoon.  I had planned to raise my stop if today this one showed hesitation, but the session low is just a dime above my current stop, so I’m leaving it as-is heading into Friday.

Closed Positions:

TIE gapped higher this morning, only to reverse and move into negative territory where it stopped me out for a 2.9% loss.  This is yet another head fake from what was a sound setup, which is disappointing, but a reminder to avoid breakout-type plays for the time being.  Given that this one cleared resistance and simply failed, I’ll avoid it for the time being.
