Hit List 4-20-2011

CCL stopped, RAX & FLIR triggered & stops raised

Open Position Notes:

RAX triggered a buy this morning as it gapped through the upper trend line I’ve been watching to open at $43.49, just over 1% above my intended entry.  As per my Swing Trading Strategy, I took a reduced position to offset the initial added risk (farther distance from entry to stop).  The stock backed off its best levels of the day in the afternoon, but still finished well.  I’ve tightened my stop tonight for this trade, as I do want to see today’s gap hold, and otherwise will watch for follow through in the days to come.

FLIR triggered a buy this morning as it gapped just over 1% past the descending trend line to open at $33.66, again prompting a reduced position according to my Swing Trading Strategy.  From there, the stock worked its way higher and finished well, so I’ll be on the lookout for follow through.  Here again, I’ve tightened my stop on this trade, as I want to see today’s gap hold.

Closed Positions:

CCL gapped higher this morning with the broad market strength, triggering my stop loss on the open.  I had tightened my stop multiple times recently due to the lack of downside follow through in this trade even after broken support, but today had to accept the opening price for my exit since the stock gapped past my intended exit.  I’m now out of this stock with a minor 2.1% loss.  The stock did ultimately fill the gap and finish negative, so I may give it another shot next week if it still looks poised to move.

BWA removed (no trigger, earnings approaching), RAX & FLIR added

Open Position Notes:

CCL bounced today along with the market, but stopped just shy of hitting my tightened stop loss.  As of tonight’s close, I’m still in the trade, but it wouldn’t take much more upside tomorrow to reach my stop and take me out.  This one simply hasn’t broken down in the fashion I had expected, so I’m keeping it tight while still allowing for a continued move lower should it happen.

ROK stopped, CCL stop tightened

Open Position Notes:

CCL eased lower today, but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of downside momentum there.  The stock has been technically weak and has already broken down, so a weak market would be ideal to see it accelerate lower.  However, today it simply tested the April 8 low and held.  While it did finish down on the day, it isn’t showing the kind of price action I’d expect in a setup like this.  Therefore, I’ve tightened my stop again for this short sale in case it attempts to turn back up from this short-term support zone.

04182011-PF

Closed Positions:

ROK triggered an entry on Friday, but today was stopped out for a 2.3% loss.  Friday’s volume could have been stronger, but the broad market weakness was most to blame for today’s weakness in the stock.  I’ll keep this one on the radar in case it sets up for another entry, but for now I’m out with a small loss.

ROK triggered, BWA added

Open Position Notes:

CCL gapped higher Friday morning but filled the gap, settling into a trading range for most of the morning.  However, in the afternoon the stock strengthened a bit, closing back above my entry level by a few cents.  This one has been reluctant to gather any downside steam, despite the lack of overall strength in the market.  Therefore, I’ve tightened my stop tonight in case this one heads higher, thus reducing my risk in the trade while I wait to see if it can continue lower.

ROK triggered a buy on Friday as it cleared the descending trend line at $92.65.  While volume could have been heavier, I was encouraged that the stock finished above the trend line and just a short distance from its session high.  I’ll be watching for follow through in the days to come.

ROK added

Open Position Notes:

CCL approached last Friday’s low this morning with an early selloff, but recovered and spent the day around the flat line.  Late in the day, more selling kicked in to take this one negative.  I’ve been patient with this one lately and still believe it has a shot to break down further, so I’m going to stick with it.  RCL is another stock in the same group which is showing weakness as well, so we’ll see if this one continues lower in the coming days.  Otherwise, I’ll likely look to make an adjustment to my stop as a lack of movement would suggest a new trading range is being established.

No changes

Open Position Notes:

CCL gapped up this morning, but held shy of yesterday’s high and then abruptly headed lower.  The gap was filled in minutes, and the stock went negative for the remainder of the day with a clean intraday downtrend.  Tonight this one still looks vulnerable to lower prices, and it appears as though Tuesday’s bounce/test of resistance has failed, so I’m still on the lookout for downside follow through for this short sale.

No changes

Open Position Notes:

CCL gapped up and continued higher this morning, but the high of the day was set in the opening minutes.  The stock held beneath my stop, which validates that level for now.  From there, it faded a bit into the afternoon, finishing up 1.5% on the day but well off the session highs.  This appears to be a test of the upside, so I’m going to stick with it for now with my existing stop loss.

AKAM stopped

Open Position Notes:

CCL bounced back slightly today after Friday’s breakdown, finishing right at my trigger price beneath former support.  Volume sagged with today’s rebound, which I’m encouraged by, and it appears today this one merely was testing the breakdown area.  I’m going to leave my stop as-is for Tuesday, waiting to see if further weakness can set in now that this one has broken down and tested former support.

04112011-PF

Closed Positions:

AKAM attempted to push north of its descending trend line on Friday, but a lack of volume prevented a close above that level.  Today, the stock came under further pressure, hitting my stop loss to take me out for a 3.5% loss.  Last week’s low was undercut, and it appears this one is still in pullback mode for now, trying to find a higher low compared to the mid-March low.  I’m out for now and will keep this one on watch in case it sets up again.

AKAM & CCL triggered

Open Position Notes:

CCL triggered a short sale on Friday as it undercut support at $37.85, continuing lower to finish beneath that level by the end of the session.  RCL is another stock in the same group which also broke down, so I’m encouraged to see the group moving alongside this one.  I’m going to leave my stop as-is for the time being and see if this one is able to continue lower in the coming days before looking to make any adjustments.

AKAM triggered a buy Friday as it pushed north of the descending trend line at $37.70 to begin another leg up.  However, volume remained below average, and the market turned lower to prevent this one from being able to gain any traction on its trigger day.  Initially this is a failure, as price has returned to its base, but I’m going to be patient with it for now and see if it can make another attempt since I still like the setup.

MDR stopped, AKAM added

Open Position Notes:

No open positions – 100% cash.

Closed Positions:

MDR struggled to continue higher the past couple of days, unable to make new highs since clearing its descending trend line.  With the reluctance it’s shown, I raised my stop on the heels of Wednesday’s downside reversal as the stock made a multi-day high then closed negative.  Today the stock broke down in the morning to hit my stop, taking me out of the trade for a modest 1.2% loss.  It headed a bit lower before reversing back up late in the day, but I’m going to simply leave this one on watch for now.
